Contestant: Alexa on The Price Is Right

Overheard in a café, a mother saying: 'Alexa you're a very sweet girl, a very good girl' and thought she'd brought her device out with her. It was, of course, her daughter but how annoying when your child's name becomes a ubiquitous device.

Smart Home

"Alexa!" Turn on the water.

Scenario

Person 1: "Alexa!" Turn on the water."

{Human} Alexa: "Ok!"

Person 1: "No, not you! I meant the other "Alexa!"

As technology accelerates & smart home products such as faucets become integrated into homes, is it realistic for Alexas and users to deal with this on a continual basis?

"Alexa!" Popcorn Please!

Appliances are essential household items. Imagine visiting someone's home who has "Alexa"-compatible smart home products set up to respond to the wake word "Alexa."

Unreasonable Expectations of Alexas {& Similar}, Parents

a.) deal with name bombardment as they hear their birth name in a commanding tone while also refraining from saying their name {or whispering} to avoid triggering products

b.) request "Alexa" users to change the wake word

a.) request users in advance to change the wake word or turn off their products to avoid triggering products and issues

b.) teach their daughter how to request a wake word change so she can freely say her birth name, when necessary or be called by her name

c.) accept their daughter will have to deal with name bombardment and determine if users are talking to the device or their daughter

a.) notify teachers in advance to ask if they have a device and if so, request a wake word change which will require teachers to explain this change to students because they will be curious about why they can no longer say "Alexa."  (i.e. time robber, user inconvenience and singling out children)

b.) teach their daughter to request a wake word change with each teacher using a device so her birth name can be used freely and without confusion

c.)  deal with name bombardment and figure out when teachers/ students are talking to the device or her

a.)  deal with name bombardment and have people whisper their name while "Alexa" users utilize their products to avoid 'inconveniencing' the users

b.)  ask "Alexa" users to turn off their products while present {i.e. "Alexa" Built-In}

a.) hear their name in a commanding tone multiple times and deal with name bombardment/confusion

b.) request the owner to change the wake word (if they are able to) each time they visit

Imagine having named your kid Alexa shortly before Amazon debuted its popular virtual assistant in 2014. You now have to live with the fact that your child's name will forever be associated with the world's most popular digital servant.

"Alexa" Flush! (vs. Amazon! Flush!) Would you be ok with hearing people commanding "Your Name! Flush!?"

"Alexa, set Christmas tree to blue"  "Alexa, set Christmas tree to sparkle"

" You can check the weather, listen to news and order more toilet paper all while sitting on the loo."
