Alexa Coalition, an advocacy group, believes the education sector must ensure best practices in voice technology in education worldwide through the implementation of a policy in schools to use non-human names only as wake words. Utilizing voice assistants as a teaching tool maintains potential but not at the cost of marginalizing and dehumanizing students.
We also seek to encourage broad and transparent debate concerning corporate responsibility, AI Ethics and the mitigation of unintended impacts. We believe Amazon needs to adhere to corporate standards for responsible branding and eliminate the wake word "Alexa" by rebranding to a non-human name or using customization.
In 2019, a grassroots movement which included parents of Alexas, Alexas and allies began collaborating, researching and raising a red flag about the negative outcomes of using a human name as the default wake word.
In April 2022, Alexa Coalition was formed to further advocate for change and best practices in voice technology and education. Advocating for implementation of corporate social responsibility and appropriate standards remains a focal point of this movement.

We advocate for those whose identities have been marginalized through the dominance of the Amazon Echo device. To this end, we seek to encourage broad and transparent debate concerning education, corporate responsibility, AI Ethics and the mitigation of unintended impacts.
We believe in a world where respect for the life experience of all people isn’t subjugated by an unchecked passion for progress.
Respect for People: We believe in the intrinsic value of human dignity. Decisions with broad and lingering impact on people should consider all potential stakeholders.
Diversity of Thought: We believe best outcomes are more likely to occur when diverse perspectives from all appropriate parties are considered and addressed.
Accountability: We believe that even decisions made with best intentions can sometimes cause harm and remediation in a timely manner is critical to good corporate stewardship.
